Darknet Diaries

The way Jack Rhysider describes a story keeps you engaged as if you are sitting around a campfire listening to a scary story. His smooth voice mixed with a perfect symphony of background noises bring his stories to life. He mostly specializes in interviewing ex-hackers and people that experienced past events firsthand to uncover the full story that wasn’t available at the time it was unfolding. He has episodes over Stuxnet, Sandworm, Unit 8200, and even uncovers the story behind the Shadowbrokers. He doesn’t use much technical jargon, but when he does, he makes sure to remind the audience what things are.

Smashing Security

A lighthearted and comedic group of friends discussing current events through a security lens. Smashing Security has shown me a variety of stories that have happened over the past few years that I would have never heard on my own. What started as a weekly video call turns into a delightful podcast that puts a smile on your face while learning about areas of security that apply to everyday life. It runs more like a talk show then an actual interview, but after one episode I was hooked. Each episode’s title lays out its topics covered in the show, so feel free to jump around and cherry pick some that look interesting.

Getting Into Infosec

Ayman interviews many inspirational veterans in the field to tell their encouraging stories and hear firsthand how they got into cybersecurity. You’ll hear some pretty interesting stories about working with the FBI, doing penetration tests, or even how people got started with no degree. It encourages its listeners to stay persistent about getting a job and is filled with tips and tricks that the professionals encourage when they are hiring people. It is an interesting narrative full of resources for the aspiring infosec professionals, and even those looking to move fields within the industry. Expect the occasional lingo to be used, but it is not highly technical, so all listeners familiar with the field should be able to understand all topics and areas covered.

Hackable?

McAfee makes me feel like I’m listening to myth busters when it comes to security and hacking. Each episode questions if the movies and shows portray reality and we listen as they test them out. With episodes ranging from hacking cars and TVs, to drones and coffee pots, this show helps to understand a bit of the technical side that makes things vulnerable to attacks. While showing real attacks, they take a lighthearted prank war theme to make it fun to listen to. Sadly, the show has not released a new episode since 2019, but it is still worth a listen!
